Narendra Damodardas Modi (modi ji) is the fourteenth Prime Minister of India, who took office on 26 May, 2014. Before assuming office as the Prime Minister, he served Gujarat as its longest-serving chief minister. He was elected as the CM in 2001 and has held the office for three terms successively

He also won Time magazine’s Person of the Year reader poll for the second time, collecting 18% of the vote when polls closed at midnight on Sunday.


Career

Modi started out selling tea with his father as a child, later running his own stall. He left home after school, partly due to rejecting an arranged marriage.

During India’s state of emergency in the 1970s, a time when Modi was an activist for the banned opposition party, the RSS, he was forced to go into hiding, frequently travelling in disguise to avoid being arrested.

He became Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001, maintaining the position until 2014. During this time, he was subject to criticism for his handling of the 2002 Gujarat riots, although his policies received praise for their positive impact on economic growth. He became Prime Minister in May 2014.
Since becoming Prime Minister, Modi has made significant improvements to his country, such as installing toilets in all schools and introducing a scheme to improve life for farmers.

During his speech for Independence Day 2016, Modi appealed to the progress of the common man, stating that ‘only by fighting poverty together with the aim of the vote when polls closed at midnight on Sunday.

Political Views

Modi is a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, or Indian People’s Party. It’s one of the two major parties in India, with the other being the Indian National Congress.

The BJP is a right wing party, with the official philosophy being ‘integral humanism’, an economic model where the person takes centre stage.

Steps by him

This initiative is motivated towards encouraging both multi-national and national firms to manufacture their products in India.His government took another large-scale initiative to bring the rural population in the fold of banking system through Jan Dhan Yojana. It provides access to financial services like banking and deposit accounts, insurance and pension in an affordable manner to all.On November 8, 2016, in a surprise announcement, he took adecesion to ban higher denomination currency notes (Rs 500 and Rs 1,000) to weed out black money and end corruption.
